Flesh Cut Fridays With Luci Westphal

RDC:  Another informing and well edited vid from our correspondent in New York.

Red Hook is a neighborhood in Brooklyn, where I went twice this past week: for the wonderful wedding of Karen and Kyle at St. John's restaurant Fort Defiance and another day for shopping at Ikea (to get ready for all the upcoming Berlin visitors). Scott and I also managed to squeeze in lunch with Caitlin (see "Caitlin Revisits Bremen") and family and of course some filming.

Red Hook is a harbor neighborhood with cobble stone streets and views of Staten Island, the Statue of Liberty, and Manhattan. It's also known for it's housing projects but is getting more and more gentrified - as seen by all the new establishments opening up. What has been keeping this neighborhood slightly off the grid and safe from intense over development and raising rents is the fact that it doesn't have a subway station. The only way to get there is by car, bus, the Ikea ferry (water taxi) from Wall Street or as we've done many times: by bike.

The song is "Warships" by Jason Matherne.

Hang Outs... New York

SOMEWHERE IN TIME

Opening Reception: Thursday October 13th, 6pm - 9pm. Music, Drinks, and Awesome Art. Johannah O'Donnell will be present. Free Admission.
Florida based artist Johannah O'Donnell creates vibrant collage-like paintings, inspired by equal parts pop culture, nature, mysticism, heavy metal, legends, and human behavior.

"The goal of this new series is to illustrate our connection to, and fascination with the natural world. I've always enjoyed the worlds of fantasy art, fantasy film, and fantasy fiction, worlds that celebrate the mystical elements of nature. Therefore, I decided to incorporate fantasy elements into these pieces in order to more succinctly express that message of connectivity. The man/animal hybrids (based on Egyptian and Native American gods) create a link between the human characters and the landscapes behind them (these landscapes were inspired by both the Hudson River School and 18th century portraiture, in which subjects were often pictured in a natural setting). To these "traditional" portraits, I added graphic iconography that supports and/or contrasts the main elements of the pieces in an attempt to create a deeper, more complex message. Each piece was created with the last piece in mind, so that the entire show creates a sense of continuity, a flowing narrative, for the viewer."

Opening Reception: Thursday October 13th. 6pm - 9pm. Free admission. Open to the public.

Lockdown Aftermath...

Westfield Centre, Derby...
Part 1, The Set Up

The Collective turned up as the Tri- Slackliners were draggin their gear up from the dingy depths of the car park to the well lit and cozy ambiance of the Westfield Shopping Centre.

This was another first for the centre (we were involved in organising a skateboard comp which Westfield courteously allowed on another Lockdown event,  a couple of years ago) and this time the Slackliners were able to introduce this sport to an enthusiastic, thrilled and exhilarated audience.

The final set up for Two Seasons was underway, with a balance board, mic, music system and iPod plugged in, it looked like it was a go!!

The Collective warmed up their camera, broke out the Relentless Energy Drink and waited for the fun to begin.

Look out for Part 2 real soon...

Keep um glued... Part 2 coming soon.

Hang Outs... London

We are really excited to be presenting the next solo show by the renowned Urban artist Dale Grimshaw. Dales bold and emotional style has attracted a lot of attention from press and buyers alike. His latest solo show promises to be his most powerful to date. 'Semi-Detached' explores what goes on behind closed suburban doors. Having experienced living with a violent and unpredictable father as a child, these works call on his own painful memories. However many of the new works find a mix of delicate melancholy as well as a fair splattering physically threatening imagery.

Prints of key works in the show will be available to buy at the opening. Also we are delighted to announce that our fine art printers, Harwood King, will be demonstrating the silkscreen process at the Private View. They will be printing a piece of Dale's work, 30 copies of which will then be given out at the opening. Dale will be signing them at 8pm and after that they will be given out on a first come first serve basis.

If you'd like to attend the Private View on the 6th October, 6 - 9pm please let us know via email. If you'd like to be sent a buyers preview shortly before the opening please let us know.

Many thanks.

Off The Shelf

     KFT 2

Hitting from the heart of Graffiti, in a British way, this magazine is for the purist in all of us.

Mainly concentrating on the age ol art of train bombing, you have to give it up to these guys, they are definitely taking their life into their own hands for their art.

Train yards have changed since the 1970s. Over the years infar-red cameras, heat sensitive image cameras and not so sensitive security guards with slavering dogs and cattle prods have been introduced. So we have to take our hats off to um, cus sooner or later they're going to have a stint behind the metal bars, for sure!

This title takes us on a trip over the railway lines and into the hoodied life of spray, intent on getting their work out there no matter what it takes. Even though it could be erased before the morning rush hour, with their images lasting hours rather then days or weeks.

Contents include:

British Rail Bomb 1, 2, 3
London's Underground 1, 2, 4, 5
Probation
Action... The Adrenaline Section
A Rat's Tale... with Tunnel Taggers and much more...

Time to duck behind the cover...

Flesh Cut Fridays With Luci Westphal

Prospect Park, the 585-acre Brooklyn park designed by Central Park creators Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, is my sanctuary. It's one of my favorite places in New York.

I've been living in a multitude of apartments near it and have many fond memories of times spent in the park alone and with friends. Over the last dozen years, as NYC has become safer and more desirable, there have a been many wonderful improvements in the park. A few years ago I started running in the park. It's become my regular place where I can take a deep breath, stretch my legs and let my thoughts wander.

While the park is a great place to visit year-round and is the place to be on weekends when it gets super crowded and whole families and big parties use it as their backyard (for big BBQs, sledding and ice skating, playing baseball, etc.), my favorite times are the more subdued off-season weekday late mornings - like when I was filming... when it's the park of only a few runners, dog walkers, cyclists, filmmakers, hustlers, parents and the birds, bees and squirrels. No matter when you go though, you get the sense that these are the lungs of "the borough of neighbors", a wonderfully diverse place where people from all cultural backgrounds live together.

It's been a very busy week - so it was a special treat to come to the park on Tuesday to shoot this video.

As so often there was so much more I'd like to show you that I filed but didn't make the cut (Quaker / Friends Cemetery, Bachelorette film crew, etc.) or that didn't get filmed this time (women strolercizing, chipmunks, hawks, Muslim women in full hijab playing Frisbee, Orthodox Jewish women jogging in long skirts, etc.).

Unfortunately on Tuesday the weather was weird - it was humid and hazy with the sky greyish but very bright, which led to less ideal shooting conditions and some strange colors and contrasts in the video.
