Off The Shelf

Art + Culture Magazine
December 2012

It's the last Issue of the years... ahhh we hear you sigh but don't worry it's a corker!

On the cover of this months zine is London based Conor Harrington. Originally from Cork, Northern Ireland his work is a mixture or street and fine arts. He says "It also shows that graff doesn't have to shock – or be soppy – to have substance".

This month we visit a wonderland of colour, interviews, products and poplife - so what else is in store:
Jen Stark - Hits Miami Beach's Art Basel.
Conor Harrington - Wanders into Mexico.
Grandy Gordon - Bad to the bone.
Julie Heffernan - In the past twenty years almost every painting Julie has done has been in a basement.
Nicola Verlato - Loves 1982's Tron with its vectorial-rendered models of armour and motorcycles.
Marco Mazzoni - I'm superstitious even though I know it's pointless.

Ok, time to get between the covers...

...Oh ya, if you subscribe to Juxtapoz now, you get this months mag free.

Cause and Effect
Visualizing Sustainability
Publishers: Gestalten

It seems like all we hear about these days is sustainability,  eco-friendly and green house gases.
So what else is there that we can do to help the Earth, apart from recycling and using hybrid fuels?

This book can put loads of ideas in your head like:
Ecochallange... an iPhone app that supports ecologically responsible living.
Clever Little Bag... a shoe bag by Puma which reduces 65% of packaging use.
DriveNow... a stationless car sharing program, book using a smartphone app.
Geothermal Energy... hook up to the Earths core and stay warm.
... and that's just scratching the surface!

Cause and Effect is a collection of work from around the world that reveals a credible and understandable contemporary visual language for communicating ecology. Its spectrum ranges from campaigns, posters, brochures, and digital media to interventions and guerilla marketing. It utilizes graphic design, information graphics, and illustrations as well as photography to get its message across... From Gestalten website.

Seeing is believing, so we believe it's time to check out the inside...

Fridays with Luci Westphal

Strasse des 17. Juni (17th of June Street) is a large avenue through the heart of Berlin.

It starts in the East at the Brandenburger Tor (Brandenburg Gate), runs through Tiergarten (animal park), passing the Sowjetisches Ehrenmal (Soviet War Memorial), circling around the Siegessaeule aka Goldelse (Victory Column), going under the Tiergarten S-Bahn train station, crossing over the Charlottenburger Tor (Charlottenburg Gate), cutting through the campus of Technische Universitaet (Technical University), where I once studied Psychology for 2 days before I dropped out to move to America and study film, and ends at Ernst-Reuter-Platz.

East of Brandenburger Tor the street is called Unter den Linden, west of Ernst-Reuter-Platz it is called Bismarckstrasse.

The street was named after the workers' uprising in East Germany on June 17th, 1953.

Social Snaps... Melbourne, Australia

Absolut x Dean Sunshine Book Launch

Things that go well together: art and cocktails.

Last week in Melbourne, Absolut vodka launched Dean Sunshine's new book, Land Of Sunshine. For the last few years, Dean has been documenting Melbourne's street art scene, and his photographs have been published into a 300-page book available now from General Pants. The book profiles influential street artists including Adnate, Be Free, CDH, Deb and Drab. The launch was aptly set in a Brunswick Street warehouse covered from floor to ceiling with graffiti. Absolut also provided some delicious cocktails (don't mind if I do). Our favourite was the Absolut Greyhound  — one part vodka, three parts pink grapefruit juice and one wedge of grapefruit.

Sprayin the System... Devon, UK

Rainbow Preschool Explore the Universe

RDC: One of the RDC Crew moved down to sunny (we can but hope) Devon, UK over the last few months and has finally got his foot in the door with some spray commisions. Here, he put smiles on small faces with his solar spectacular... great work - we miss yeh buddy!

With the Help of Daniel Kehily-Jones the preschoolers at Rainbow Preschool, Merton can now explore the universe while using their outdoor play area.  The preschool put out a plea for help as our outside play area was looking a little worse for wear and Dan kindly came to the rescue.
Now the preschool has a great new piece of art to inspire imaginations and encourage play.Rainbow preschool is a small rural preschool run by parents for their children with an emphasis on learning through play.  Play helps young children to learn and develop through doing and talking, which research has shown to be the means by which young children learn to think. Our setting uses the Development Matters in the Early Years Foundation Stage guidance to plan and provide a range of play activities, which help children to make progress in each of the areas of learning and development.  We hope our new piece of art will be at the centre of many child lead explorations through space and art.  We are now hoping to turn the children’s summer house into a space ship so they really can blast off.

Daniel Is a North Devon based Illustrator and designer with a lot of street art background. When he's not out surfing the waves at Woolacombe and Croyde he's painting shop interiors, cafes, community venues and many other locations. He studied Visual Communication at Derby University and since then has been working alongside lots of community projects and personal projects. Dan's work is very versatile as his skills include traditional and modern techniques from Screen-printing to spay painting. He takes on commissions of all shapes and sizes and is always interested in your thoughts and ideas.
