Keepin Up With... Buff Monster

 Legend of the Pink Cherry

Opening reception: Saturday April 14th, 7-10pm

Yup, I’m going back to Corey Helford for my fifth solo show at the gallery. I’ve been hard at work on an all-new body of work and I can't wait for people to see it. And as if a whole new set of paintings wasn't enough, this time around the show opens on my birthday. A special night indeed. You won’t want to miss this one!

Here is the official word:
Internationally known for his super bright, happy, and bold imagery, the paintings in the main gallery will celebrate the last eleven years of Buff Monster’s career, culminating in a timeless epic tale of good vs. evil. For the “Legend of the Pink Cherry,” the artist draws inspiration from Renaissance paintings. Buff Monster will introduce his latest creamy creation, a soft serve ice cream cone with human-like arms and legs. Each acrylic-on-wood panel piece in the show is delicately rendered with airbrush, a first for the artist.

Buff Monster’s narratives are more character and figure-based than before, and the series of paintings created for the exhibition will also reveal a new direction in Buff Monster’s career. “I’ve always thought of my work as inspired by and representative of Los Angeles—Hollywood more specifically. Los Angeles is the birthplace of Buff Monster. Part of why I feel compelled to tie everything together is that I feel that this chapter of my life and my work is coming to an end, and I’m looking to the future. It’s time to go East.”

SMALL
International Group Show 28 April 26 May 2012
Opening Night: Saturday 28 April 2012 6-8pm at 19 KAREN Contemporary Artspace

A little piece of Brooklyn, New York, will be coming to the Gold Coast in the form of the SMALL International Group show opening at 19 KAREN Contemporary Artspace on Saturday 28 April 2012.
The SMALL International Group Show sees 33 emerging American artists collectively show what they have to offer the Australian art world. SMALL is curated by established and celebrated artist of the Brooklyn community R Nicholas Kuszyk. The idea came to him after thinking about how emerging artists with limited budgets could display their works internationally without having to pay huge amounts in international shipping fees. The solution was to send small works as a collective.

Other artists that will be featuring in the SMALL exhibition include: SWOON, Blok, D’Metrius Rice, James Callahan, Jessie Rose Vala, Jonathan Mehring, Katherine Chanler, PARS, Patrick Berran, Ryan McLennan and many more

Please join us and Curator R Nicholas Kuszyk for the Opening Night of SMALL International Group Show at 19 KAREN Contemporary Artspace on Saturday 28 April 2012 from 6-8pm. Drinks and nibbles will be provided.

To RSVP please call (07) 55545 019 or email info@19karen.com.au.

Keepin Up With Roger Gasman

New Movie Release
Wall Writers=20

RDC: Roger Gasman has just emailed us. He wants you to take a look at his new movie out on release soon... Lookin ace Roger!

Please check out the trailer to my new documentary:
WALL WRITERS=20
Graffiti in its Innocence
1967-1972
I hope you enjoy. The film is finished and we are
currently figuring out its release. John Waters even did the narration for
it.

Thanks
Roger

From director Roger Gastman—a producer of the Academy Award-nominated documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop—comes Wall Writers, a documentary on graffiti in its innocence.

Through unprecedented access to TAKI 183, CORNBREAD, and a host of other legendary writers, Wall Writers tells the story of a time when underprivileged city kids refused to keep lurking in the shadows, when the streets were so wild that fame and infamy became indistinct, when art became a democracy and self-promotion became an art.

In The Hood

Last month we found this Hood in a University Arts Department, on a lovely design student's head named Imogen.

This month we find it hanging around with one of the Collective Crew - Tempora, in an urban spray setting. He is famous for his eye murals and they are no doubt checkin out his stylist head attire.

If multi-colours aren't your thing then the Hood is reversible with a matt black interior, for those of you who are into the dark side. If you are into colours there is loads more to choose from on the Neonbeige site.

All you have to remember are the German words 'In den Warenkorb' which means 'In the shopping cart'... Simples!
