Felt Reign on the Rampage

‘Back-off Fool’

We have been trying to keep up with FR but she is so busy keeping the peace, it is really hard keeping up the pace.

Luckily we got a couple of pics, one in an ally-way above and the second in our local coffee shop, below... NICE!

Hang Outs... Victoria, Australia

Tom's latest show, Stick Folk opens this Friday, 2nd May from 6pm at Backwoods, featuring a large body of original work, over 20 paintings, 9 etchings and unveiling a large steel sculpture.
Tom’s background in Australian street art goes far back to his contributions to the Empty Shows in 2000. Since then he’s been an important figure in the Melbourne scene, an organizer, activist and a generally great guy.
Tom Civil is working on a modern way to see Australia: “Aussie punk and positive”. He has captured private moments of tranquility that connect the bush to the city, expressing them expertly in aerosol through fine lines, overspray and cutbacks.
The result is a new vision of Australia which reconciles Australia’s underground with tradition.

ISSUE 25

After a few months of not receiving a review copy of this fab local mag we have realised how much we really missed it. Finally Issue 25 of VNA slid through our letterbox and sat on the doormat demanding our attention. 'God we have missed you’ was our first thoughts as the crew mingled around to periosteum the ... issue... Over the shoulder of the lucky person who was thumbing through it first.

It is nice to see Swoon on the front cover, not only is she good looking lass but also a very talented, with her memorable and detailed paste-ups, as well as being renowned for her out spoke views on 'street art' and featured in numerous documentaries on the subject.
The magazine itself has a slightly different feel to it, as well as a lot more pics and write ups, which can't be bad right... Defo not and after intently scrutinise every last millimetre, we have come to conclusion that this issue... Can't be missed!

So what we got inside:
With 11 artists on the contents page and 3 cities to visit, it is proving to be a busy little mag. We scanned the contents list and recognised Kevin Lyons the design force behind some classic and sick Girl Skateboards designs.
Nick Sheeny with his muted shades and woodland creepers. We also picked up on an ace graff artist Dan Kitchener, who bombs on sides of ships and plans to project images onto the White Cliffs of Dover - big plans, let's hope he leaves more to be desired. And the extraordinary Japanese Female graffiti artist Shiro, who's easily recognisable busty girl characters bounce off the page ( another image at the end of her write-up would have finished off the view nicely by the way.)

To end, Visits to the cities of London, Hong Kong and Lodz round off this Issue 25 Very, Nearly and Almost :)

Like we said Almost but not done yet -one last thing to do, let’s look inside...

Mornin All

Finally the Iron Lung Lives...

 iAm Iron Lung

RadDad and Vez hit a local spot today, and at long last RD did an Iron Lung spray hit!
Due to the shite cold weather RD’d been reluctant to graff with the gloves on. All was good today, the sun was out and so where the cans.

Above and below out of the sketch book onto the wall. Iron Lung lives, couldn’t do ahead-on shots due to being in a narrow staircase. Vez with the nice green/blue peacock.

Keepin Up With... Buff Monster

LA Mural / MOCA

I recently got back from LA, where I installed my Toy Machine at MOCA, and did a big mural for Vista Del Mar.

The machine was unveiled at the opening of MOCA’s new Mike Kelley retrospective at the Geffen Contemporary. I made a whole bunch of new resin heads, including more hand-painted ones and pieces with colored swirl resin. If you’re in LA, go check it out.

The mural for Vista Del Mar: The school asked the students to draw faces and I chose some of them to use in the mural. We also had a bunch of students help fill in colors. The school has been around for over 100 years and this is their first mural, so big thanks to the school for being open to something new and being very accommodating. Thanks to my man Rob for helping me with it. And a real BIG thanks to Branded Art for setting it up and handling all the details to make it happen. Paint provided by Montana Cans and Branded Art.

As usual, I did the whole thing freehand, with spray paint. Go check it out if you're in LA; it’s at 3200 Motor Ave.

Ciou, MalOjo, and Dima Drjuchin

April 5th to May 4th, 2014

Ciou, was born in Toulouse in 1981, she actually works and lives in her home town, after living in Bruxelles and Paris. Suspended between dream and nightmare, her paintings consist of a base made of a collage of old papers, taken from old medical books, dictionaries, and nature manuals, where she uses acrylic and ink; creating her own personal mixed media. Her Influences are diverse : the American vintage culture from the 30′s to the 70′s, the Victorian style and the European barocco too, however she is focused on the Japanese culture and Japanese traditional and contemporary art. Her style is characterized by a line of great expressive force and a language where the power of color and deformation of shapes combine to make her stroke unmistakable. Ciou creates her own « necro-kawai » cosmology of characters mainly centered around witch-y nature burlesque girls and their strange animal companions. Her new works feature florescent psychedelic colors as a foil for her obsessive black line work. Her darkly charming works are creepy in a very playful way, a little bit of sweet and a little bit of sour in a friendly and dangerous world .

Malojo born in Bayonne (Bask Country), lives and work in Toulouse. Comics, cartoons and old monster's movie posters are his first loves. Also fascinated by classic painters like Bosch, Bruegel or Caravage, they are as important to him as Tex Avery, Walt Disney and Chuck Jones. The humor, sometimes cruel, of those cartoons characters as he loves the horrible scenes of religious painting. It came on his own to start painting funny monsters with tortured flesh and cute puppies with bad intentions.

Dimitri Drjuchin is an artist/musician who was born in Moscow, but grew up making images and sounds in New York City. Wielding the culmination of human potential wrought from the depths of the bicameral mind, Drjuchin’s art is a hyperdimensional machine that invokes creatures who come bounding forward with affection and recklessness. These are not the Icons of the Byzantine Church—they are the new Incarnated Symbols of the Multiverse. Drjuchin allows us a glimpse into a fractulated moment of cultural hypnagogic modality and an opportunity to alter our perspectives of reality.

Off The Shelf... 1000 Tattoos

1000 Tattoos
Published by: Taschen

Our first memory of a tattoo was an imaginative attempt by a girlfriend of a friend...
Mari was her name and she attempted to do a tatt with a safety pin and some pen ink - not the prettiest outcome as she would readily admit but she went onto doing proper tribal tattoos and was trained by a Japanese master.

Today Mari works more with a contemporary gun set-up but always likes to look back at classic oldies as much as possible, so I know one or two copies of this book will end up in her Tattoo Studio...

1000 Tattoos by Tacshen takes us through the history of this permanent art form, from Tribal Beginnings, full body Circus -Freak Show Attractions, Navy Anchor Classics, Biker Gangs, Wrestling Mega Stars and Up to date Ace Interpretations of Today. This Book is full of descriptions and vibrant photo’s, so is a must for anyone who into art and the staining of skin...

More about the book from Taschen’s website:

✺Art historian Burkhard Riemschneider runs an art gallery in Berlin and has published several monographs on contemporary artists.

✺For years, Henk Schiffmacher has been recognised as one of the stars of the tattoo scene. His Amsterdam studio attracts countless tattoo pilgrims, and he also runs the Amsterdam Tattoo Museum, which exhibits material from Schiffmacher’s own vast historical and contemporary collection.

“A fascinating and disconcerting book in which, on every page, the human body is displayed to fire the imagination of each of us …”
