Keepin Up With... Phlegm

Antwerp Paint

I Painted in Antwerp for the Day one festival organised by street art Belgium. Painted on the cultural centre, Columbiastraat, Luchtbal. This is the first of a series of creation myths I plan to paint on some big walls. Based on some ideas I'm working with for my next book.

Big thanks to Phlegm for the info and pics.

Street Scene... Coffee

What We’re Drinkin this Week
'Cafe Turquino'

A  friend of ours who is a regional manager for a big coffee company and is a true coffee lover, went to Cuba recently and bought back what we think is a perfect cup of coffee (defo a tall order to fill).

It’s called Cafe Turquino, an ace flavoured arabica beaned brew, which releases a lush cocoa kick and a fine honey undertone to produce a true class act if ever tasted one (a mouthful or what).
Plucked from the ridges of the Turquini Mountains, this bean batch comes from small producers and has a limited run per year,  so...

Off The Shelf

Pablo Picasso
Women-Bullfighters-Old Masters
Publishers: Gestalten

Good old Pablo worked in loads of different media during his life time from stage design,  ceramists, printmaker, drafts person, sculpture- which includes plastic art- and painter (don't think we missed anything out).

This hefty bound publication consists of 290 pages of concise text and well cataloged pictures.  It's demonstrates the brilliance of this childhood generous who started out painting as a realist artist and finalised as a surrealist.

An ace quote from Picasso:
"Everyone has the same energy potential. The average person wastes his in a dozen little ways. I bring mine to bear on one thing only: my paintings, and everything is sacrificed to it【...】."

From the book:
"Women, Bullfights, Old Masters presents 200 graphic prints, lithographs, drawings, and collages from Pablo Picasso’s artistic beginnings in the early 1900s to his late works from the 1960s. Ranging from black and white to colorful, the artwork represents his various styles from classic to cubistic to surrealistic. The included texts not only examine the work in a historical context, but also reevaluate it from a contemporary point of view. "

Street Scene... Coffee

What We're  Drinkin At the Moment

Everyone has their own thoughts on coffee - taste, depth, head, heart and body.
How much you drink or how little, enough to blow your mind or just enough for a slight buzz...

Unless your a true 'caffeine crack head' like us, then maybe it doesn't really matter to you but like fine wine, each region of coffee growing has it's own unique body and taste. Like we have said before, a lot of the RDC Crew use Coffee Houses to meet artists and do interviews or discuss the next graffiti hit or nurse a mug of java, contemplate life and draw.

There are a lot of good local coffee shops around, also some of the bigger Houses have great brews on offer. If your just looking for a mug then Costa offers a cup brewed by the tamping method (barista's use human force to seat the coffee in the bed) which may not always produce a consistent strength or flavour from cup to cup. Were as Starbucks uses a machine to do the work, which allows for a more consistent beverage.

Supping from a cafetiere (french coffee press) is an ideal way of enjoy our favourite brew and if you buy a bag of beans from Starbucks, they will grind your beans and allow you to enjoy your roast by using their cafetiere in the cafe for as long as the bag lasts, defiantly something to consider!

What we're on right now:
We are currently drinking 'Starbucks Caffe Verona', a Dark Roast which means it lingers on the pallet for the rest of the day and gives you a hit of Cocoa and a Sweet yet Spicy intensity.

Go get your Java on and enjoy a cup, hope to see you in a Coffee House real soon...

Off The Shelf... 'Street Talking'

Street Talking
Author: Mike Popso
Publishers: Schiffer

Firstly, we would like to apologise fot the lack of book reviews over the last few weeks. Unfortunately there hasn't been anything new on the market worth reviewing until NOW...

Check out life in the fast lane with this gorgeous street art publication called 'Street Talking'.

Author and Photographer Mike Popso started off his interest in Graffiti when skateboarding with his older brothers and their friend who was a graffiti writer.  During their weekly skateboarding session on the city streets, this guy used to point out newly sprayed walls and fresh tags to Mike. This is how the interest in photography, urbexing and graffiti all started.

He spent ten years taking pics and painting graffiti, this book is the culmination of this period in his life.
A weighty 250 page book full of colour and vibrancy this publication throws down on a wide of surfaces which include trucks, walls, dumpsters, billboards and skate parks. With shots from Detroit City, New York City, the West Coast and all important Europe.

Artists include:
Cash Boy
Laser
Danke
Os Gemeos
Alike
Zone
Profits
... to name just a few!

Let's see what we got inside...

Street Spots... Derby, UK

UpDate

Hot off the.... umm press - We were just told that inside the burnt building was found a body... we didn't think the Police would have been that worried about a beautiful old building!
RDC: Big thanks for the info Jess.

This morning one of the main roads we use was cordoned off by the police...

Wandered what was crackin off, we went to the other side of the detour to find one of our favourite Derby building had been hit by fire. This site is just off Great Northern Road was originally the Friargate Station, Goods Yard and Depot which was built in 1876. These buildings are Grade 2 listed and have been slowly degrading for many years.

The Derby Council are responsible for this site and with the large depot (in the distance in these pics) losing it's roof years ago, which sped up the deterioration of the structure. So why did this near pristine building catch fire when, (as far as we know) it was locked up.

Sure makes you think that if this structure fell into disorder, then the council could rip-down both building and have an ideal spot for redevelopment... say know more??

Keepin Up With... Alice Pasquini

Capitoline Museums

As part of the opening of the new Ufficio del Sindaco per i Rapporti con i Cittadini, Rome mayor Ignazio Marino commissioned artwork by three artists - Alice, Bol23, and Luca Padroni - to decorate the rooms and become part of the Capitoline Museums' collection. The offices are open to the public and can be viewed during regular business hours. To see the all the paintings, as well as a time lapse video of my work click here.

A weekend trip to Bologna was a nice chance to paint some new pieces.
